In the spring of 1992, I made a decision that has had a tremendous impact on the trajectory of my life. That was to walk into the New Creation Youth Steel Orchestra band room and learn to play the Steelpan. 24 years later it’s time to give back. Steelpan and music has been a huge source of pride for my family and my community. It connects us to people in amazing ways, fosters cooperation, collaboration and forms bonds that can last a lifetime. My purpose in Nugen Steelpan Academy is to help students learn to play this amazing instrument and gain a better appreciation for the people of Trinidad & Tobago and Caribbean Culture. And by doing so, build confidence, community by connecting people from different walks of life together. Because with music, we realize how much more we have in common with each other than not. Playing the Steelpan is awesome!
