Experience the highest quality guidance while learning to play the steelpan instrument.
This class will provide you with a solid foundation in the steelpan instrument. This class hits the high points and is ideal for anyone without prior steelpan playing experience. You will gain a high-level history of the steelpan instrument, how it is crafted, an introduction to proper playing technique, the first seven notes on their steelpan of choice, and more. At the end of this class, students can play a simple melody based on the first notes learned.
Continuing “Introduction to Steelpan,” this class builds on a student’s foundational knowledge. Through hands-on musical instruction, students will learn the remaining notes on their steel pan of choice, the rolling technique used when playing the steel pan, basic music theory, and the Chromatic scale. At the end of this class, students can play the Chromatic scale, ascending and descending.
This class explores Calypso and Soca music’s various melodic and rhythmic elements. Students will continue developing their playing fluidity through 8th-note and 16th-note Chromatic scale exercises and be introduced to the Major scales. At the end of this class, students should be able to play different rhythms at faster tempos.
To participate, we recommend at least one year of playing experience or completing all class levels in our program. This is an opportunity for the experienced steelpan player to join the community Steelband and participate in yearly performances. Members will also engage in music theory, stylistic steelpan art forms, & techniques.
